At the heart of Carratraca is the spa, or Balneario. It can be found above the main square in Calle De Los Banos and is built in a Roman style out of sandstone and marble. 
The baths boast various hydrotherapy rooms and pretty pools filled with spa water which is freezing cold as it rises out of the depths of the mountain. Although it has recently undergone extensive renovation, the building retains all its character, with its massive old wooden doors and decorative tiles. 
The spa is back in use today, with people enjoying some of the more up to date treatments available such as osteopathy, aromatherapy and shiatsu massages. Solar power now provides the means to heat the water to more comfortable temperatures.
The therapeutic value of the waters is famous and they are effective for many ailments. 
They are especially noted for their efficacy in healing arthritis, skin disorders and respiratory difficulties. Many well known people visit the baths including Lord Byron, Napoleon 2nd, and more recentlly Antonio Banderas, whose family still live in the village. Carratraca is also well known for its spring water, which is deliciously soft, and can be found at the foot of the village near to the El Punto/ El Martillo bars where it pours from a tap 24 hours a day. People come from all over the Malaga region to fill bottles with it to take home.
